Meet us at the Tavern
Probably said millions of times in the 18th century. On 24 January, in Saint John, NB, at O'Leary's Irish Pub, a joint presentation was given on Taverns in the 18th Century and their importance to the communities in which they were located. Professor Bonnie Huskins, PhD, of UNB Fredericton, spoke on the importance of taverns to the early Loyalist history of Saint John.

The event called "Meet us at the Tavern" was co-sponsored by DeLancey's Brigade, a living history re-enactment unit now in its 45th year, and by Studies of ye the Long 18th Century. Hosted by O'Leary's Pub in their Upper Tap Room, we had an enthusiastic audience.

The Union Flag of Great Britain that flew through most of the Long 18th century.
On 1606 April 12, the first Union Flag was created by royal decree under King James VI & I. This version combined the red cross of St. George (England) and the white saltire of St. Andrew (Scotland). It was primarily used on ships at sea. The flag became the official national flag of the newly formed Kingdom of Great Britain following the Acts of Union 1707 May 01. The current Union "Jack" design was adopted (1801 01 01) to mark the union of Great Britain and Ireland. This version added the red saltire of St. Patrick to represent Ireland.
